Good planning will ensure noggins are detailed in the design of the frame. At times a sparkie or plumber may need an additional noggin. These can be easily installed on site. If additional noggins are required, there are a number of options available. Here we will look at using an adjustable commercial noggin and also at making a noggin out of timber or steel.
Commercial noggins are adjustable to the size required and simply inserted between the studs, levelled, and secured using the correct fasteners. A number of commercial brands are available. If using a timber noggin as shown here, once measured to the required size, rebate a groove to slot into the lip of the C-section. Treated timber is incompatible with steel frames and must be isolated from the frames or trusses.
Best practice is to apply the membrane to all contact surfaces of the frame. The noggin is then inserted, levelled, and secured with the correct fastener. You can also easily make a steel noggin on site.
Noggins can be made in a number of ways to fit the connection required. The make a noggin fact sheet provides a step-by-step guide. In the video here, you can see a noggin being made using a pre-notched noggin. The new noggin can be easily cut to size using tin snips.
Notch out the return lips. And then using a vice grip, fold up the tab. The new noggin is inserted and outside screws fastened.
Then changing to a 10x6 drill bit, screw fix the back section. The longer drill bit allows a deeper angle and ensures the screw is correctly fixed.
